Coachella Bail Bonds

The City of Eternal Sunshine, Coachella, CA, lies in the eastern part of the Coachella Valley, about 28 miles east of Palm Springs. Like most of the Coachella Valley, the City of Coachella lies below sea level, while the Salton Sea, located 10 miles south of Coachella, lies a whopping 227 feet below sea level.

Coachella Origins

Coachella was first founded as a railroad way station that provided mesquite and greasewood to the Los Angeles area, for which the area became known as “Woodspur.” Jason L. Rector was the first known white settler in the area that would become known as Coachella. After several years, Rector was joined by his brother Lon, and the two began exploring the Coachella Valley. Jason Rector had an idea that the valley covered a large amount of untapped water that could be used for irrigation if it could just be uncovered. In 1900, the brothers dug the first well in the valley, tapping into an artesian water flow that would supply an abundance of irrigation water.

The original well was dug near what is now the intersection of Grapefruit Avenue and Fifth Street, in Coachella. Once the well was completed, the brothers began laying out a townsite. Several other financial backers were involved in the design and promotion of the new township. Together, the city developers decided to name the town Conchilla, meaning “Land of the Little Shells.” This name was to honor the large number of small shells that were found in the area.

A Mistake in Naming

An advertisement was designed and sent to the printers. The advertisement was meant to promote the new town and draw farmers and investors to the area to work and live. However, a mistake at the printers changed the spelling of the name of the town from “Conchilla” to “Coachella.” A reprinting o the advertisement would have delayed the announcement of the new opportunities in the Valley and the  group of investors made a decision to simply adopt “Coachella” as the new name of the town so that they could proceed with the promotion.

The discovery of irrigation water in an otherwise arid region led many farmers to relocate to the Coachella Valley. Primarily an agricultural community, Coachella is known for the grapefruit that bears its name, and for the Indian Casinos located along the city limits. While not the host for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the city is often confused with the festival itself. However, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is, in fact, hosted by the City of Indio, a town adjacent to the City of Coachella.

Bail Bond Rates at the Coachella Jail

The state of California requires that all bail bond companies charge 10% of the total amount of bail, in order to post bond for a defendant. That means that if the bail is $20,000, the bail bondsman is required to charge $2,000 to post a bond in place of the bail. While this may still seem like a lot of money, it's far less than having to pay the entire amount. The rates the law requires for Federal and Immigration Bonds can be as high as 15 – 20%. But, all of these rates are set by statute, and all bail bond companies are required to charge the same amount.

California law allows for a discounted rate on bail bonds if the defendant retains a private attorney and pays the premium in full within 72 hours. These discounts are allowed for government union workers, members of the military, and AARP members. These discounts are determined by the surety company that is writing the bonds for the bail bond company.
